Self Help - The Wisdom Of Emotional Skills

There are so many things we never learned in school.  Of all the things we learned in school, emotional skills were never taught. We never got a chance to take a class on dealing with negative emotions, or how to create more love and intimacy in our lives.  We never learned how to thrive emotionally.

Actually, though, there are many emotional skills that can be learned. Simple but powerful tools like cheerfulness, simply being of good cheer, is something we can learn and practice. And, there are some skills that can be called Higher Emotional Skills.

One such skill is Conscious Compassion. Directly and on purpose applying compassion to some of the people and circumstances of our lives. We all feel compassion sometimes, but mostly we think it has to hit us, like when we watch the news and see suffering people. However, the truth is that you don't have to sit around and wait for bad news to feel compassion. You can generate it.

That is one crucial point about all the Higher Emotional Skills. They can be learned. Used on purpose. We are not at the effect of our emotions all the time. We can generate certain emotions on purpose and bring them to our life and way of being. You can have as much love and compassion as you want, to a large extent.

This is why it is called a higher emotional "skill." You can learn to bring it. Say your boss has been bothering you. You think the guy is a rude jerk.

What if you generated some conscious compassion for your boss? There are several steps we do not have space to go into here on how to do that, but what if you considered these issues: what if your boss is going through a divorce? Or dealing with the death of a loved one? Or what if they, like many of us, are unhappy and dissatisfied with their life but don't know what to do about it?

If you generated some compassion for your boss, right now, what would change? What would change for you? Well, for one thing, you'd likely stop complaining about your boss so much. You'd probably feel more peace and tolerance for them and their suffering.

There is much more to the Higher Emotional Skills, but they are powerful and can change everything inside you, in your space. Applying something like Conscious Compassion to your circumstances can begin to alter the way life shows up for you. It is worth developing this kind of emotional intelligence.

Wisdom and Self Help Reflections:

What higher emotional skills do you feel you already have?

Which ones would you like to develop more?

What can you do to start generating, bringing, a higher emotion into your life?

Wisdom isn't about taking action or not, it's about knowing when to do either.   Running around doing lots of things may or may not be wise.  Keeping busy can keep you from doing what is most important.  It can keep you from inner peace and harmony, which is not wise.  On the other hand, sitting around thinking empowering thoughts without taking any action is also unwise.  But developing higher emotional skills will pay off!  Check out the links below for more:
